The earth laughs.
The earth cries.
The earth wonders.
The earth grieves.
The earth smiles.

The earth embraces us just as it did our ancestors long ago. But it's too close to always be aware of. Every day is so busy, it is easy to forget. And at that moment we lose sight of what is important.

Prologue

JUNKAN
Story of the beginning

    Our Story
  1. Economic development that prioritises human convenience is having a huge impact on the global environment.

It all began when we realised that something was wrong, a slightly misplaced connection between the planet and humans began to manifest itself as a major distortion. Economic activity in favour of capitalism causes extreme weather conditions that disrupt the ecosystem; plants and animals that are searching for a way to survive. It's caused by inconsiderate human behaviour. The human-first convenience that has become all too commonplace is now a danger to nature.

  2. Mankind's everyday behaviour has a direct effect on nature.

For example, a plastic bottle is very useful─light, strong and doesn't break when dropped. Born of human research, plastic bottles have become an integral part of our lives, contributing to the expansion of the economic sphere by making things lighter and easier to handle and transport. However, if you throw a plastic bottle away without thinking, it has a direct effect on nature and everyday we can see the damage created by this carelessness.

  3. Natural selection by anthropogenic environmental changes

Nature is finally starting to show the damage. Global warming is causing massive melting in the polar regions that were once covered by thick ice sheets, endangering the regions at lower sea levels. Higher seawater temperatures increase the average temperature of the surface of the earth. This is forcing major changes to plant and animal lives and leading to a phase of natural selection caused by anthropogenic environmental change. Distorted social systems are suffering rapid deforestation. Excessive plantation, unsustainable forest management and non-traditional slash-and-burn agriculture─nature is losing its balance.

  4. The tipping point

Now is the time for us to consider the future with creativity and integrity. Craftsmen who look 100 years ahead work with their very fingertips to open the way to the future. Farmers who look 1,000 years ahead are courageously working with a system that is out of sync. In a hundred years will people smile in the Sahara desert and others dance in the Mediterranean? The world we live in belongs to whom? "Today's world is stealing from our children's future".

  5. Local, Ethical, Ecological.

Local = regional and nationwide, Ethical = ethical principles, Ecological = in harmony with nature. We strive to harmonise with nature from an ethical point of view respecting traditional methods in Japan. Weaving connections gently and kindly is the way to light the path to the future. If each one of us lives on the earth with thoughtfulness and compassion for our neighbours. Then this is "JUNKAN = Connections"─the craft brand that is friendly to both people and the planet.
